Big names from the world of music and literature will be among the many highlights at a weekend of culture taking place later this year.
The first ever literary and jazz weekend will be held in May bringing a cultural boost to the town.

Organised by the Friends of St Mary's Church in Rushden, the event will run from Friday, May 8, to Sunday, May 10, and will include big names such
as British author, Fay Weldon and top jazz musician, Andra Sparks.

Organiser John Allen said: "This is a first for Rushden. It is unusual to get such a well-known writer and such talented jazz musicians in the town. It is going to be a big weekend with lots to do and it is hopeful that it will attract hundreds of people."

The weekend will begin with an evening with Fay Weldon on the Friday.

Weldon is the author of more than 20 internationally acclaimed novels, short stories, screenplays, and television dramas, including the pilot episode for the television series Upstairs Downstairs.

On the night she will be giving readings before she is interviewed by her son and top jazz pianist, Nick Weldon.

This will be followed by questions from the audience and a book signing.

On Saturday, the evening event will begin with a performance by the Northamptonshire Music and Arts Big Band.

Then, Andra Sparks and Nick Weldon will be joined by three renowned jazz musicians for a spectacular performance.

On Sunday, book and music lovers will be able to enjoy writing and jazz workshops throughout the day.

Lots has been planned for the big weekend and there is still more to be announced.

The Friends of St Mary's have been hard at work trying to secure enough funds for it and the event is now being sponsored by Spire Homes, security company E-Bound Solutions and Abbotts Funeral Directors.
