Village remembers its lost world war heroes
EARLS BARTON, E/B Museum, The Square - meet Iona Flanagan & others running a project to find out more about the WW1 names on the village war memorial
The fallen heroes from the First and Second World War will be remembered through a village history project.
All of the men whose names adorn Earls Barton’s war memorial will be remembered through the project being run by members of the Earls Barton Museum Trust and village’s historical society.
The team is currently in the process of researching the history of the 98 fallen soldiers, and that of the village during the wartime period.
They hope to use their findings to produce a history book about the village and its sons who made the ultimate sacrifice for their country.
Iona Flanagan, chairman of the museum trust and historical trust committee members, said: “The project is about our military history, but we also want to find out more about their families and about what the village was like at that time.
“It was a sacrifice by those men and their families, because they gave up their sons.
“We have already discovered that one mother lost three sons.
“If we don’t collect this information now it will be gone.
“People still have memories from that time, or people might have photographs that could get thrown away.”
As it is just two years until the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War, the group hopes to have the project finished in time to release a book in 2014.
Members are currently in the process of applying for Heritage Lottery Funding to help fund the scheme.
They are appealing for anyone with any memories, photographs or documents which are relevant to their research to come forward.
They also hope to work with local schools to get youngsters involved with the project.
