Tresham demolition to start next week

Corby, Tresham College, George St old campus buildings awaiting demolition

Corby, Tresham College, George St old campus buildings awaiting demolition Friday, 07 October 2011

Demolition of the former Tresham College, in George Street, Corby, starts on Monday, making way for the town’s new six-screen Odeon cinema.

Work on the site was delayed while bats inside the building were moved.

Preparation of the site will enable land owners Corby Council and the Homes and Communities Agency to sell it for a proposed leisure complex.

The tendering process is under way and, as well as the cinema, proposals include restaurants, a pub, parking and new homes. Some preliminary work to dismantle the former college started inside the building on January 9 and it will take construction company Coleman until May to clear the former campus.

The latest redevelopment will complete Parkland Gateway, which includes The Cube, swimming pool and changes to George Street.

Leader of Corby Council Cllr Tom Beattie said: “Residents in Corby have told us that they wanted a cinema in the borough and we are very proud and pleased to see work begin on the old Tresham site.

“This new leisure facility will take pride of place next to the Corby International Swimming Pool and Corby Cube, making Parkland Gateway a hive of activity for residents and visitors to enjoy.”

Laura Bell, area manager for the Homes and Communities Agency Midlands, said: “We are really pleased to have made a start on site at the former Tresham College, where we have worked closely with the council to bring this land to market, in what is still a very challenging climate for the development industry.

“The site is an important part of the town centre’s prosperity and its development will complement other HCA housing investment in Corby and boost local jobs and economic growth.”

The council allocated £500,000 from its woodland management fund to demolish Tresham College to allow building work on the cinema to start as soon as possible.

It is expected the leisure complex will create the equivalent of 120 full-time jobs.

@Comedian, you know when somebody has lost the argument when they start to introduce other irrelevant points. The Cube has got nothing to do with any other council, be they Labour or Tory and it has nothing to do with the Corby and EN MP. The Cube as a building is striking, but the important points are it's cost. The cost told to the Corby Council Tax payer and the final cost, when it's been shown that Labour Councillors do not discharge their duties to ensure Corby Council Taxpayers money was wisely spent then the Corby Council Taxpayer will make a judgement if they wish to trust this sorry lot with any more of their money. Nothing to do with Rushden, Kettering or the MP. Had the Cube been erected for £30 million ( the figure told to Corby) and everything was fully constructed and fitted out then there would be no argument. This isn't invisible money it's money that could have been spent in Corby attracting real jobs that pay real wages. As it is Corby is broke.

The more the real people of Corby speak out the more shrill and desperate the Tory trolls like labour out sound.I don't care whether the cash we paid on going to the Cube goes. All i know is we would not be getting the massive multi million pound PRIVATE" investment in the town center without the regeneration work done by Labour.Look at the fantastic work done by Tory Kettering council....oh wait. How about Rushden council trying to ram an unpopular, unwanted and as it turned out unaffordable out of town redevelopment of leisure facilities, that would have involved the killing of real comunity facilities like Rusden Rugby club.Good job the Rugby players took them on and won.So the morons at Rushden council now want to kill the town center by giving the green light to an out of town retail development genius .Im sure Labourout would love to see the town and it's people suffer the way they had to under the last Tory government, but we will have to continue to dissapoint Meanwhile and much to the Tories irritation Corby continues to regenerate and move forward.Questions for you Labourout.....1 if we had an election tomorrow do you think your girl would win....would she even be bothered to stand?....2 do you think that scrooge Harker will turn the street lights back on for the Queen's visit?

@LabourOut - 'substandard', lol! Chomp! Who wants to sit on the roof in winter? I'll stay in the excellent Library Plus with my kids or enjoy the Theatre. In any case, it's not me you need to convince, your trolling for the local Tories on this is falling on deaf ears - there's no 'tide' of public opinion, other than the one you are failing to generate in your consistently negative comments on Corby regeneration. I repeat what everyone is telling you, maybe it's time you up and left Corby, you won't be missed. Bye bye!

Dear Mr Comedian, last of the big spenders, I suppose you think your Core tickets help pay for the Cube, well no, the Core gets £250,000 every year from Corby Council Tax payers and no matter how many tickets they sell none of that money will go towards paying the £175,000 of debt repayment paid every year for the Cube. It will take a very long time for local business's to pay enough business rates to pay for all the debt incurred by the Corby Council tax payer. Dear Mr Substandard, if you think that a building that is 50% over budget with large areas that cannot be used, the Coffee shop? The restuarant ? The roof top garden? The public viewing gallery ? Is a success I really wonder what you would class as a failure.

Well I didn't hear anyone grumble about the CUBE being a waste of money last night at Jimmy Carr's show.fantastic night. And the proof that it has stimulated private business was that we ate a nice meal at the Italian resturant across the road before the show, and were able to go to and from in taxis. All in all we spent a total of around £100 in the local economy.I wouldn't like to guess how much the other 450 people at the show spent, but I would bet it would add up to thousands. The CUBE has stimulated growth in our town that will dwarf the public money spent.New business's are springing up on the back of this stimulation and regeneration. All the Torries can do is give millions in tax payers money to their cronies. And destroy and priviatise our NHS.I hope the LIBDEMs see sense and bringdown the coalition,if there was a general election tomorrow Mench would be the first to go....and she knows it.

@LabourOut - "As the tide of public opinion has turned" - when did that happen, ah do you mean a couple of angry letters from the Tory group in the letters page? Is that your idea of a tide LOL!? Good luck with that son. The Cube is brilliant, we're the envy of the county, and the vast majority of us are happy to pay for it. You're flogging a dead horse son so give it up or get a new job. Why don't you go over to Kettering cinema and console yourself watching the Iron Lady with a box of tissues LOL!!!!

Dear Mr Larkin , You're getting confused , when you take out a mortgage it's something you are fully aware of and agree to. This is not the case with the Cube. Dear Mr Ruby123 I think you'll find the people are coming for the shopping. A shopping centre with thousands of pounds per week of rental income which was sold for £73million. Contrast that to the £40+million Cube with very little income.

Yes, I knew it would take a while to pay back, just like when I took on my mortgage. I believe one day the Cube will be the saviour of Corby....And as for 'frontline services' the Tories are really improving and safeguarding them LOLOLOL.

Dear Mr Labour out, have you noticed what is happening to Corby Town centre? its getting really busy, its buzzing, its attracting people from all over. It is looking great. The cinema will also bring loads more people into the town centre, people go to Kettering now and they will certainly feel the effects as will the eateries there...............Now my council tax (which you say will pay for the cube) Its no more than the same property in Kettering, in fact its less so I feel I am getting good value for money. Perhaps you would feel better in a town where you get less for more? I actually feel a lot better about my hard earned cash going towards the cube than I do about it going towards Mr Camerons kitchen improvements.

Dear Mr Beast , not sure you understand what being in control means, it means you make all the decisions. The Tory group have questioned the Cube spending throughout, that's all they can do. Dear Mr Larkin, is suppose you were always aware that Corby would have to pay for the Cube for the next 50 years and this was clearly stated in all Labour campaign literature, and that the money being spent on debt repayment is not needed for frontline services. You can't hide from the facts.

zzzzzzzzzz sorry, fell asleep then. The Cube and projects alike are just like having a mortgage. You simply pay over a period of time for something you cant afford up front. Same as using a credit card. I suppose Labour Out does not have a morTgage or ever bought anything on a CC.

Lots of anti-Labour words, but not a single mention of what the opposition have done throughout this process. Unless you start making your posts credible and justified, they're as empty as I understand the blue presence was at one of the meetings last night. Before you start thinking i'm a Labourite, i'm actually a floating voter but can't see what the Tories offer Corby apart from bitching over the finances of projects the town badly needed
