Thousands transported back in time

Fantastic displays of commercial and military vehicles are among the attractions drawing in thousands of visitors to this year's Cavalcade of Transport and Country Show in Rushden.

It is the 31st year the three-day event has been staged by the Rushden Historical Transport Society.

This year the organisers received a record number of entries from exhibitors and expect that up to 25,000 visitors will see the show before it ends today.

Society chairman John Sugars said: "This is the biggest show we have held on this site and we had to close the entries for exhibitors last month because we had such a great response from them.

"We have also had a great response from the public and I think this is because the show has a very good reputation.

"We have had visitors from all over the Midlands and have had exhibitors from as far away as Lancashire."

The attractions include exhibitions of agricultural machinery, tractors, vintage buses, coaches and cars, models, locomotive engines, fire engines and ambulances.

Highlights in the arena include displays by motorcyclists, Duston Pacesetters dog display team, miniature steam, steam vehicles and Rushden Young Firefighters.

There is also a wide range of stalls and fairground rides.

Among the visitors on Saturday was Gail Atkins, 43, of Raunds, who was

there with her husband Barry, who was exhibiting a Land Rover, their daughter Laura and Gail's mother June Hawthorn.

Mrs Atkins said: "We have come lots of times. We have not seen as many animals this time but my mother enjoyed watching the ferrets."

Russell Sturgen, 53, of Aspen Close, Rushden, said: "I come here quite

often and I think there's a good range of vehicles."

Steve Purcell, of Kettering, took a few minutes away from his trade stall to have a look around. He said: "This is my first time as an ex-hibitor but I visit the show most years.

"It's a good show and I like the old steam stuff."

The show is open today from 10am off the A6 south of Rushden.

Proceeds will go the town's transport museum.
