Red faced police raid wrong house

The latest odd stories from Britain and around the world. Read on..

WRONGFUL ARREST

Armed police were left red-faced after they raided a suspected drug den to find they had the wrong people.

Mark and Eleanor Hartshorn were petrified when their Sunday morning peace was shattered as police battering rams broke through their front door. A dozen police, including two armed officers, stormed into their home in Swindon.

Wiltshire police were executing a warrant for the property but were actually looking for someone who they say used to live at the address.

SURE SHOT

A woman was shot in the leg by her husband in a freak accident, according to police.

Mandy and Jon Hudson were carrying out checks at Bromeswell Lakes, near Woodbridge, Suffolk, when Mr Hudson tripped on a rabbit hole, a spokesman for the fishery said.

He said the legally-held firearm triggered and hit Mrs Hudson in her ankle.

BATH TIME

Firefighters were called out to free a 22-stone woman who was stuck in her bath for five hours.

Rosemarie Batey, 49, promised to lose weight after the embarrassing incident at her home near Tantobie, County Durham, which ended with her needing hospital treatment for cuts.

The grandmother of three was taking a midnight shower when the bath cracked open, causing her to slip and get wedged in.

ROBOT HOLIDAY

Some robot-loving Japanese are tinkering with screwdrivers and motors instead of heading to the beach or hot springs during the country's 'Golden Week' holidays.

Among the robots on display at Vstone Robot Centre in the bustling Akihabara electronics district was the 4ft tall 'Alcnon' which shuffled about, controlled by a remote handheld device, and made jerky punches with its claw-like plastic arms.

During the national holiday, which began last week and runs through to Wednesday, tourists who visited the centre were also fascinated by the dancing Tichno, which flayed its arms and leaned rhythmically from side to side.

WAX AUCTION

Wax figures of all four Beatles have brought in nearly 8,600 at the first auction in the 44-year history of the Hollywood Wax Museum.

"The Last Supper" - wax representations of Jesus and the 12 disciples - commanded more than 10,000 in the weekend auction that sold close to 330,000 worth of statues, costumes and other memorabilia.

Fans also bid on Michelle Pfeiffer as Catwoman from Batman Returns, Charlton Heston's Moses from The Ten Commandments and figures from the cast of M*A*S*H.

GOOGLE BACKLASH

When Google Earth added historical maps of Japan to its online collection last year, the search engine did not expect a backlash.

The finely detailed woodblock prints have been around for centuries, they were already posted on another web site, and a historical map of Tokyo put up in 2006 hadn't caused any problems.

The company is now facing inquiries from the Justice Ministry and angry accusations of prejudice because its maps detailed the locations of former low-caste communities.
