Youngsters go out to enjoy Playdays

Play was the order of the day at a series of fun events in the north of the county.

National Playday, which celebrates the importance of getting out and about and having fun through play, was marked at two events held in Corby yesterday.

Children at Kids Play based at Beanfield Primary in Farmstead Road, Corby, held a series of events throughout the day.

And thousands of people visited West Glebe Park in Cottingham Road to take advantage of a huge 'beach', a surf simulator and giant inflatable.

Corby Council brought in 20 tonnes of sand for youngsters to get digging as part of the National Playday fun day.

There were also face painters, craft workshops a steel band, a junk percussion group and clowns.

The event was run by council playrangers and was free.

Mum Sarah McFayden, 32, was there with her two children Lauren, five,

and Sam, three. She said: "We do come to West Glebe quite a lot so the little ones were made up when they saw all this here.

"It is sometimes tough finding things for them to do because the summer holidays are so long, but there's plenty for them to do here.

"We went to the free beach event in the town centre last week too, so it's not cost us too much to keep them entertained."

Lauren said: "My favourite thing was the sand. We were watching the clowns too."

Simone Aiken, 21, from the Lloyds estate, was there with her nieces Tammy, seven, and Destiny, eight.

She said: "We went on the big slide and in the sandpit.

"It's a lovely idea and it lets them play with their friends because they've been a bit bored staying in the house for the past two weeks because the weather's been so nasty."

The National Playday is aimed at celebrating the nation's free play spaces.

Government funding has paid for three new play areas in Corby in the past year – Ollerton Walk, Glastonbury Road and 'Stevie Way' play areas.

There are 16 more new parks being planned for areas across the county in the next two years.
