Young musicians all set for festival

More than 500 young musicians are preparing to strike the right notes at an annual music festival.

Wellingborough Junior Music Festival returns for the 20th year next week.

Young musicians who live or attend school in Wellingborough borough will compete in various heats of the contest, which will run from Monday to Thursday at Sir Christopher Hatton school, in the town.

The finals of the festival will take place at the school on Friday.

An awards presentation and concert performed by all the class winners will take place at The Castle theatre, Wellingborough, on Thursday, March 11.

A total of around 240 entries have been received for the festival for a range of instruments and vocal performances.

As some of the classes are for duets and different sized ensembles, the number of young people taking place is around 550.

The competition will be divided into three age groups.

Children from six to 10 will compete in the junior group, there will be an intermediate group for youngsters aged 11 to 14 years and a senior class for those aged 15 to 18.

Classes will include piano, brass, vocals, woodwind, strings, duets, choirs, ensembles and musical composition.

Each class winner will be awarded a cup and all the winners will then go on to compete for the ultimate prize of being named Young Musician or Young Vocalist of the year.

John Higgs, from Wellingborough Rotary Club, said the club hopes members of the public in the Wellingborough area will come along to the concert at The Castle to see the youngsters' talent for themselves.

Mr Higgs said: "People say there's nothing going on in Wellingborough, but there's lots of things and these youngsters are living proof.

"People can come along to the concert and see what these youngsters can really do.

"The concert will be absolutely fantastic."

Tickets for the concert on March 11 are 4, 2.50 for concessions and 2 for under 18s.

Tickets are available from The Castle box office by telephoning 01933 270007.
