Woo-hoo! Blockbusters help cinema break records

A CINEMA has broken its own box office record after more than 20,000 people visited in a single week.

Moviegoers have been flocking to the Odeon in Kettering to see blockbuster hits like Harry Potter and The Order Of The Phoenix, The Simpsons and Shrek The Third.

In the week starting July 27, a record number of people visited the cinema complex, which is just off the A14.

The cinema’s marketing manager Simon Hopkins said: “The first seven days since the release of The Simpsons became our highest-grossing week since we opened in December 1997 which, as we approach our 10th anniversary, is certainly a healthy achievement.

“It’s all down to the enormous appeal of the Springfield family, combined with the enduring success of Harry Potter, the popularity of the musical Hairspray and special-effects adventure Transformers which were all here simultaneously.”

He said that in the past, audience numbers had shot up with the arrival of the epic series Lord Of The Rings, along with the previous Harry Potter films, but this was the first time they had seen such high numbers of visitors.

Mr Hopkins said it was the pull of the America’s most famous family that was the driving force behind the record-breaking week.

He said: “The Simpsons has been hugely popular and because it’s a much shorter film we’ve been able to have more screenings.

“Also, the weather has been quite poor which means more people come and watch a film.

“We have been doing so well this year in comparison with previous years.”

Cinema-goer Rebecca Bolton, 15, of Kingswood Place, Corby, went to see the latest Harry Potter adventure with her friends.

She said: “I haven’t read any of the books but I thought the film was really good.

“I was really impressed with the settings and it was quite a dark film.

“There were quite a few messages about friendship and trust.

“I’m looking forward to the next one.”

She also went to see Shrek The Third and was impressed with Eddie Murphy as the voice of Donkey.
