Wonder of recycling for old Woolies store

A recycling shop which only opened a few weeks ago has moved into a prime town centre spot.

Unwanted items dropped off at the county's recycling centres recently stopped being sold at the sites and began being taken to special re-use shops.

One of the stores opened in Eaton Walk, Rushden, run by J & S Recycling, which won the contract for items from the three recycling

centres in Wollaston, Rushden and Wellingborough.

Business has been booming ever since and following its success so early on, the store has re-located to the old Woolworth's premises in High Street, which briefly became Heron Foods, before that too, closed its doors.

Northamptonshire County Council awarded the contracts and a spokesman said it was decided to move the store because of the volume of goods coming through to recycle and the demand of people wanting to buy them.

The spokesman said: "The county council is committed to reducing the amount of waste that is sent to landfill in the county and is dedicated to ensuring that we all reduce, reuse and recycle as much as possible.

"We're delighted the Rushden re-use shop is so popular and that the town centre location means that the recycled goods on offer are easily accessible."

Mum-of-three Shauna Boyles, 33, of Irchester Road, in Rushden, said the new shops were a good idea.

She said: "Not everyone is on huge incomes and these type of shops help all pockets.

"It sells a wide range of items and there really is something for everyone."

The Rushden shop is open 9am to 5pm Mondays to Saturdays and from 10am to 4pm on Sundays.

It is one of six re-use shops across the county, including stores in Cunliffe Drive, Kettering, and at Rannock House in Geddington Road, Corby.

The shops are run by private individuals who pay for the right to sell the items which come from the recycling centres and are all thoroughly checked before they are put up for sale.
