Women and girls urged to join race

A mum-of-two who survived cancer is urging people to join her at the county’s Race for Life this summer.
Emma Freeman, 36, was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2009, despite having been told that her symptoms were probably due to depression.
After a double mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, sporty Emma, of St Anthony’s Road, Kettering, has exercised her way back to health and plans to run the 10k Race for Life event only nine months after undergoing reconstructive surgery.
She said: “I was inconsolable when I was diagnosed with cancer. The worst thing was that my children were so young. Lily was only two and I couldn’t even pick her up and cuddle her after my surgery.”
Emma’s daughter Lily, now aged four, and son Harvey, seven, will join her at the big event on Sunday, June 17, at Abington Park, Northampton.
She said: “Once I had had my reconstructive surgery in September last year, I worked really hard to get back to full health and I’m now running and going to the gym again. It feels great. I can’t wait to take part in Race for Life because it is really important to me to say thank you for the research that saved my life.”
Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life in partnership with Tesco is a women-only series of events, which raises millions of pounds every year for life-saving research into 200 types of cancer. Women can choose whether to walk, jog or run the 5k or 10k route.
In 2011, 5,300 women took part in Race for Life in Northamptonshire and helped raise a fantastic £324,000.
