Women jailed for street brawl

A woman was left with deep cuts to one hand and stab wounds to her body after being attacked after a night out.

Claire Widdowson stabbed Kelly Succo on September 12 last year leaving her with cuts to the hands and right breast.

Widdowson, from Corby, admitted wounding and affray at a previous hearing at Northampton Crown Court this year.

The 26-year-old, of Leighton Road, was jailed for four years on Friday.

Martha Reid, of Gainsborough Road, Corby, was also sentenced for her part in the attack.

Reid, 46, had also admitted one charge of affray for an attack on Anna Johns.

The court heard that Mrs Succo and Mrs Johns were drinking in the Corby Candle pub on Elizabeth Street on September 11 when an argument broke out with Widdowson and Reid.

The attack happened in the early hours of September 12 outside Widdowson's home on the Hazel Leys estate.

Mrs Succo, who lives opposite Widdowson's home, went with Mrs Johns to continue the disagreement

Reid then arrived and the four became involved in another brawl during which Mrs Succo was stabbed and Mrs Johns left with bite marks.Sentencing Widdowson, judge Ian Alexander QC said: "You have been before this court on a number of occasions for theft and common assault.

"That escalated in 2004 with wounding using a knife. This is the second occasion you have used a knife.

"People who go out in the street armed with knives risk causing serious injuries and other offences.

"You are a danger and you will be sentenced to four years in prison."

She will also be on extended licence for one year.

Sentencing Reid Judge Alexander said: "I accept you did not have a bottle in your hand to use as a weapon.

"But you kicked her to the ground and punched."

Reid was sentenced to 18 months prison.

In mitigation the court heard the attack would not have happened if the victims had not continued the argument in the early hours.
