Woman leaves £1.2m to charity

A woman from Wellingborough who started work at Weetabix at the age of 16 has donated £1.2m to charity in her will.

Kathleen Mary Ball, who died in 2006, left the cash to international development charity Christian Aid.

She had been a long-standing member of Wellingborough United Reformed Church and a supporter of Christian Aid since 1987.

The Rev Paul Bedford, of the United Reformed Church in Wellingborough, said: "Kath Ball and her husband Harold were generous and concerned members of this church.

"She was a loving disciple who expected high standards of herself and others and her sense of humour also shone through.

"She felt that if God loved the world enough to send his son then we, today, had better shape up and be the best we can be."

Mrs Ball had a long and fulfilling life. She started work at Weetabix when it was known as the Britain and Africa Cereal Company and worked there until 1946.

She married Harold, who ran a cycle and electrical shop in Cambridge Street, Wellingborough, before retiring in 1965. He died in 1999, weeks short of his 100th birthday.

Christian Aid said the legacy was a hugely important part of their fundraising and accounted for about 10 per cent of the charity's income.

Christian Aid legacy manager Colin Kemp said: "Christian Aid depends on legacies.

"They help to provide much-needed support to some of the world's poorest people by allowing us to respond to emergencies and provide training and tools that will allow communities to become self sufficient.

"Mrs Ball's legacy is about more than just money. It will enable Christian Aid and our partner organisations to invest in people's futures and bring about real lasting change for generations to come."

Christian Aid is hoping Mrs Ball's example will encourage others to leave money for the charity.

Next month it is holding its Will Aid promotion which last year raised more than 90,000 for the charity.

Christan Aid is an international development charity which works with disadvantaged communities in 50 countries to help represent their interests and speak out against oppressive governments.

People who are interested in leaving money to Christian Aid are asked to telephone 020 7523 2173.
