We reveal the name of town's new arts venue

The curtain is set to rise at Corby's new arts venue – The Core.

Its name was chosen during a three-month process which saw a wide range of groups in the town involved in shaping the venue.

Marian Anderson, an artist who works with the Youth Involvement Team at the Connaughty Centre, Corby, suggested the name.

She said: "I don't want to take all the credit.

"The name The Core came out of a brain-storming session involving other people but I'm really proud it was chosen.

"To me it symbolises that the venue will be right at the heart of the Corby community."

Chris Sudworth, a former freelance director specialising in theatre for young people, has been appointed The Core's creative director.

He said: "There have been so many people willing to share their ideas with us.

"We're excited to have chosen a name suggested by a member of the community that reflects our ambition to be right at the heart of what's happening in Corby.

"The people of Corby are incredibly creative and we're looking forward to working together to make The Core a place where everyone feels welcome and everyone can get involved.

"I want people to feel that The Core is theirs."

A free open weekend will be held in November to give people a taste of what the arts venue has to offer.

Its first big production, a Christmas show telling the story of Hansel and Gretel, opens on December 3.

The Core will bring top class comedy, drama, dance and music to Corby and there will be at least two professional productions a year which will be created and rehearsed in the town.

Workshops involving individuals, schools, artists and community groups will also be held to showcase the creative talent in the town.

A new independent charitable trust has been set up, Corby Cube Theatre Trust, working in partnership with Northampton Theatre Trust which operates the Royal & Derngate in Northampton.

The aim is to provide a full range of live entertainment for up to 25,000 people a year.
