Walkers raise funds in memory of little Joe

DOZENS of children and their parents have taken part in a fundraising walk in memory of a 10-year-old boy who died just a few days after Christmas.

The walkers braved the cold weather to walk a mile round Higham Ferrers in memory of Joe Johnson, who died from a brain haemorrhage on December 28.

The walk was organised by 11-year-old Frances Pegg, who was one of Joe's best friends at Higham Ferrers Junior School. All the money raised will go to the Winston Wish appeal, which helps young people cope with bereavement.

Frances said: "I organise a sponsored walk every year with a new charity. I thought it would be nice to do something for Joe this year."

The youngster had 135 of sponsorship and she was expecting to collect several hundred more from the other participants over the coming weeks.

Joe's parents, Sam and Karl Johnson, of Lynden Avenue, Higham Ferrers, joined the walkers for their stroll.

Mrs Johnson, 29, said: "The death of our son was really tragic.

"The people of Higham Ferrers have been magnificent. The walk was really good and it was lovely to see all the kids turn out.

"Winston Wish provides mental and social support for children coping with family bereavements.

"Our daughter Hannah has got a book by the charity which helps her, which is why we chose this charity."

Former next door neighbours Debbie and Joe Granfield now run the appropriately named JJ's pub in High Street in the town.

They hosted a charity auction, with prizes donated from 25 local businesses, and some Easter Sunday fun for the children after the morning walk.

Mrs Granfield said: "The news came as a big shock. He was a bright and talented little boy.

"We were asked if we could host the event. I said 'we'll shut the pub up all day if you want'."

Joe's school is having a 2,000 picnic house put in place in the playground in memory of the youngster.

His grandfather, Wayne Brench, 58, is also running the forthcoming Dunsfold 10km run to help pay for the memorial.
