Villagers opt for bridleway scheme

VILLAGERS in Harringworth have opted for a bridleway to take the place of a historic road which has been closed since the 1960s.

Harringworth Parish Council held an open meeting for residents to discuss the future of the road. It ran from Wakerley Road to Laxton Road and was closed by the Government to allow for mining.

But part of the original agreement was that it would reopen in 2016.

About 35 villagers attended the meeting at Harringworth Village Hall.

They were presented with proposals under consideration by the parish and county councils showing a proposed bridleway and footpaths if it is agreed the road will not re-open.

Jim Cosford, senior rights-of-way officer at the council, asked residents whether they preferred the road reinstatement or the bridleway, which has been endorsed by the British Horse Society and Ramblers' Association.

Simon McLean, chairman of Harringworth Parish Council, said the bridleway option would go ahead as soon as possible, but if the road was chosen then it would not go ahead until 2016.

At the end of the meeting 28 people voted for the bridleway and six for the road.
