Villagers set up group to fight massive housing plans

Villagers who fear plans for a massive housing development between Hardingstone and Wootton could ruin their village have set up a working group to take on the developers.

Rita Freeland, who lives in The Warren in Hardingstone, opposite the land earmarked for thousands of new homes by the Wootton Consortium, announced the new group at a Hardingstone parish council meeting.

Mrs Freeland promised the group would move quickly to show its opposition to the plans, which are currently undergoing public consultation.

She said: "I have had discussions with Gill Greaves, chairman of the parish council, and met with quite a few people who live in The Warren regarding the proposed development of housing within the boundary of Hardingstone.

"The working party wants to preserve Hardingstone as a village by negotiating a buffer zone on the boundary and to ensure that the proposed services are within the planning documents and are to the advantage of the village.

"At the moment, we're all doing little bits and this is the idea of the working party, to work together."

Borough councillor Michael Hill (Con, Nene Valley), who also attended the meeting, said he was unable to comment directly on the working group because of his position on the borough council's planning committee.

But he did say: "Various building companies are trying to move forward very hastily on putting together parcels of land, on getting the necessary planning permission for it for the strategic plan for the future of land around Northampton.

"The Conservative administration earmarked that site for a future cemetery, which would be a buffer against the development."

Councillor Hill confirmed the borough council currently has no plans to build a new cemetery near The Warren.

The Wootton Consortium continues to consult the public about the plans with public workshops and a public exhibition planned for early April.
