Village hall to get makeover

The hub of a village has been given a new lease of life thanks to fundraising and a £20,000 grant.

The committee at Benefield Village Hall, which serves Upper and Lower Benefield, applied for the grant from Wren (Waste Recycling Environmental).

And members encouraged people in the area to help raise the funds to upgrade the building.

The group has now announced that its application was successful – and work has already started on the building in Causin Way, Lower Benefield.

The hall is at the heart of the community for the villages, which have a total population of just 308.

The grant was awarded in December last year and will be used to refurbish and upgrade the toilet and kitchen at the hall.

The work is being done by local contractor S A Green Builders and it will also include the provision of toilets for the disabled.

Benefield Village Hall committee chair Ellie Andrews said: "Getting the Wren grant has provided a fantastic boost to the village.

"Along with additional donations from the county council, Benefield Parish Council, Benefield in Need Charity and local fundraising, the Wren grant has really helped us upgrade a much-needed local amenity.

"We are hoping to have all of the work completed by the end of April and will be able to offer a much improved facility to anyone looking to rent a local venue on a regular or one-off basis."

The hall is used during elections as a village polling station, and is the venue for children's groups.

The organisers would like more groups to make use of the hall now it has been refurbished.

Wren receives most of its funding from the landfill tax levied by Waste Recycling Group and redistributes it in the form of grants.

Anyone who would like more information about the hall or for bookings should contact the committee on 01832 205289 or 205224.
