Ups and downs in latest crime rates

The latest crime figures for four county towns have been released.
In Burton Latimer, there was a sharp rise in incidents of almost 50 per cent last year compared with 2010, while Desborough saw a reduction of nearly 15 per cent.
Rothwell saw 21 per cent more crimes during the same period, but incidents in Barton Seagrave fell by four per cent.
With only 140 crimes committed last year in Barton Seagrave, it is the most crime-free place to live.
Fergus MacDonald, chairman of Burton Latimer Town Council, said: “I don’t think we’re unduly concerned by the rise in the town.
“Of course, it’s always concerning for any organisation when there is a rise in crime, but the figures show that they are relatively minor crimes.
“Some of the increases, particularly theft, could be due to lack of thought from the victim, such as leaving their bike on show.
“I’m confident that the police are on top of the crime figures, and I’m sure if any trend emerges we will be on top of it. I think the figures also come fairly heavily from the Christmas period, when crime tends to rise.”
The figures were released and debated at the A6 Towns Forum at the beginning of the month.
The statistics cover the period January to December 2011, and compare incident rates to the year before.
In the same period, all four towns recorded a reduction in anti-social behaviour.
Desborough saw the biggest drop in anti-social incidents, with a 33 per cent reduction.

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 02:13 PMI agree with Aliss on this. Most newspapers, not just this one, are so poor at reporting figures and statistics that they are practically meaningless. "In Burton Latimer, there was a sharp rise in incidents of almost 50 per cent" sounds shocking, when it could be an increase from two crimes to three crimes. "Desborough saw the biggest drop in anti-social incidents, with a 33 per cent reduction." Again, sounds substantial, it could be down from three crimes to two crimes. If a paper chooses to run an article on a report, survey etc, you shouldn't have to dig around for the original just to make some sense of it.

Monday, February 27, 2012 at 12:38 PM"i live in barton seagrave and it IS the safest place to live in the region. i dont even lock my doors." I say, Bunny. There's a fellow here called mein Capitan or something who says that he lives in Barton Seagrave and leaves all his doors unlocked. I think we'll pay the place a visit. But we'll have to make it snappy: after he wrote this, every common housebreaker in the East Midlands will be descending on Barton Seagrave.

Sunday, February 26, 2012 at 08:48 PMaliss...the article is comparing 4 areas. out of the 4 areas, only barton isnt a total dump. desborough and rothwell are full of criminals moved from the rough areas of corby and kettering. Also burton has gone down hill fast in the last decade. so yes, safest place out of those by a long way is barton seagrave - even without stats. Dont even need a lock on my door here.

Saturday, February 25, 2012 at 08:51 AMYou really can't take these figures seriously and debate them, lets face it there will always be unreported crime and crimes that are undergoing investigation that are not included in these figures. Sackville street has two drug dealers living next door to each other, both of whom deal drugs openly in the street, there is another one round the corner and one down the street, that's not counting the ones in the flats and bedsits. it's been going on for years....under investigation... a couple of bustsraids and still it goes on, anti social behaviour, murder, deaths, robberies....drink and drug fuelled problems. We the decent neighbours wonder what the crime figures are for notorious areas, they ought to publish them and see if they look good! We lock our doors.

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 01:50 PMEr, you say "With only 140 crimes committed last year in Barton Seagrave, it is the most crime-free place to live." That's an abstract and unsubstantiated statement - could you give us useful numbers please? I mean, I could happily say that my street is a LOT more crime-free than Barton Seagrave, because the crime rate last year was 2 scratched cars. So it's 138 times more crime-free than Barton Seagrave. An absolute number of crimes in an area is an utterly useless measure, we need to know how many people live in the area to get a valid comparison
