Two companies fined over Rothwell worker's death
Two companies have been fined a total of £67,500 for breaching health and safety law five years after a Rothwell father was crushed to death by a forklift truck.
Shane Neal, 34, of Rothwell, was killed in May 2003 while working on a Building Research Establishment project in a hangar at the former RAF Cardington in Bedfordshire.
The forklift truck he was driving overturned and a Health and Safety Executive investigation concluded Mr Neal was not adequately trained to drive the vehicle, which had been provided by Building Research Establishment.
Mr Neal's employer, Welwood Roofing Services Ltd, of Corby, was liquidated in 2007, but was fined 50,000 and ordered to pay costs of 25,000, at Luton Crown Court on Thursday after being found guilty of breaching the Health and Safety at Work Act.
Building Research Establishment of Watford was also fined 17,500 and ordered to pay 12,000 costs after pleading guilty to breaching the Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations.
