Tresham to be site for cinema

A multi-million pound development, including a cinema, hotel, restaurant, flats and a pub has been earmarked for the old Tresham College site in Corby.

Corby Council is in talks with a number of developers interested in the George Street site and is hoping to apply for planning permission by next June.

The plan for the site features a restaurant and cinema in one building, a food hall, 50-bed hotel, pub, 32 apartments and car parking.

No cost has been estimated yet, but the council will be relying on securing outside investment to pay for the majority of the development, keeping the cost to the taxpayer as low as possible.

The site is owned by the Homes and Community Association, which is one of the major investors in Tresham's new Corby campus.

Council deputy leader Mark Pengelly revealed the plans at a meeting of the council's overview and scrutiny panel last night.

He said: "What we are saying as a council is that we are not going to stop with the building of the Cube – we believe we should carry on developing Corby town centre and leisure opportunities for young and

old.

"The chief executive Chris Mallender, leader Pat Fawcett and myself are in talks with several developers who have earmarked the town centre site as a hub for leisure facilities.

"We are talking with several cinema chains, pub chains and hotel operators to develop the site at as little cost to the rate payer as possible.

"Every time we have dialogue with young people, what keeps coming back to us is a cinema. It has been top of every agenda and it is a priority for Corby. It looks like we are now near to getting a cinema developer for the town."

Henry James, 41, of Elizabeth Street, Corby, said: "I think a cinema has been a long time coming. I remember the old cinema above the Corinthian pub and that closed 15 or 20 years ago. Corby people have had to travel to the cinema ever since.

"It is definitely a good idea. A bar would be good too so people could have a beer before they go to the pictures."

Ann McDonagh, 55, of Corby Old Village, added: "It would be a really good idea because all the hotels are miles out.

"We go to the cinema quite often and we have to travel to Kettering so

having a cinema here would be a brilliant idea."
