Town celebrates most famous son
RUSHDEN Library, Newton Road. Eric Fowell with his new display about H E Bates
A new exhibition about one of Rushden’s most famous sons has been launched in the town.
Historian Eric Fowell has put together an exhibition about Rushden-born author H E Bates in the town’s library in Newton Road.
And anyone whose interest is whetted by the exhibition can attend the latest meeting of the H E Bates Reading and Discussion Group which will be held in March.
Mr Fowell said: “We’ve got about 50 people interested in attending the discussion group so far and we’re still looking for more people to join us.
“The meeting should be very interesting – John Longstaff has a very interesting tape from 2005 when we celebrated H E Bates’ birth and our speaker will be well-known writer and lecturer Ian Addis, of Kettering.
“Ian will be looking at H E Bates’ The Feast of July which is based in Irthlingborough and the surrounding countryside.
“This will lead to an open discussion about the story so we’re encouraging people to read it before they come along.”
The group will meet from 2pm to 4pm on March 28 at Rushden Bowls Club restaurant and there will be a break for tea and biscuits. Admission is £2.
The group’s next meeting will be on September 26 at Knuston Hall which is closely connected to H E Bates’ Spella Ho.
At the group’s last meeting in September 2011 it raised £40 which was donated to the Warwickshire and Northamptonshire Air Ambulance.
The exhibition will be in the library throughout February.
