Town preparing a Fair Trade guide

Wellingborough is preparing to celebrate its status as a Fair Trade borough with a special celebration and a new directory.

After five years of work the borough was finally awarded its Fair Trade certificate last March – and the big celebration takes place on Monday evening.

The mayor will hosting the party at the council offices and a representative of the Fair Trade group will attend to tell those attending about the organisation's ongoing work and ever growing list of produce.

Susan Bedford, who worked as part of the steering group to secure the bid, said: "We have worked very hard to but the work is by no means over. Once you have a bid you can't keep it if you don't increase the number of businesses that are Fair Trade in the area.

"It's not a case of sitting back and resting on your laurels as we have to keep up with the work.

"We are hoping that the new directory of fair trade providers and users will encourage new businesses and work places to come forward and pledge to use Fair Trade products.

"We are also hoping that the directory will provide an incentive as all retail and catering outlets will added. We have also listed all of the other business who are looking to become fair trade."

The Fair Trade steering group is now looking for new members to promote fair trade in the area.

Mrs Bedford added: "One of our members goes to schools and scout groups – others promote it in the workplace and go out to various companies.

"It is by no means a closed group and we are keen for new members to join us."

Fair Trade produce helps producers in developing countries obtain better trading conditions and promote sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a higher price to producers as well as social and environmental standards.
