Town looks into an Olympic TV idea

Screens could be put up in Wellingborough town centre to show big events such as the Olympic Games.

The proposal was raised at a meeting of Wellingborough Town Centre Partnership.

It had originally wanted to consider putting up a screen for the World Cup this summer.

But town centre manager David Cross said there was not enough time to organise it.

However, he added: "It's something that could happen.

"I would suggest it would be more in the future than this year, because I can imagine a big screen would cost a lot."

He said the idea could possibly come forward as part of the BIDs project the town centre partnership is working on.

Under this scheme, businesses in the town centre would have to vote on the proposal.

If businesses backed the plan, it would then be funded by the companies themselves, using cash they would theoretically put into the BID project.

But as the BID project is in its infancy at the moment it is unclear if this will happen.

Mr Cross said although he didn't think screens would be put up for the World Cup, they might be put up for other major sporting events.

He said: "If we weren't going to do it for the World Cup, the next event we could do it for would be the Olympics.

"I am sure people would be pleased if there was a big screen up."

The Evening Telegraph recently reported that Kettering Council was looking into the possibility of showing matches during the World Cup on big screens in Kettering Market Place.
