Tips to beat the burglars at store

Shoppers in Wellingborough were given tips and advice on how to protect themselves from distraction burglaries.

A Home Office roadshow visited the Tesco store on Monday in an event mainly aimed at older people and students.

It took place as part of a national campaign aimed at helping the public spot and deter bogus callers.

Shoppers were given advice and tips from crime prevention experts and were also given free Secure Your Home Packs, which included discount vouchers for home security products and information on how to sign up for a Personal Password from utility suppliers.

Home Office minister Alan Campbell said: "It is vital people remember to check the identity of any stranger who calls at their home. Genuine callers will not mind waiting.

"Help and support is available from the police, local authorities and utility companies so make sure you use it."

The advice from police is to keep doors locked, use a door chain to keep unexpected visitors out, check ID properly and make sure the phone number matches the number in the yellow pages.

Don Peile of Tudor Way, Wellingborough, said: "I actually live on my own so I think this is important.

"Anything to stop distraction burglaries is good. I am a pensioner and it mainly seems to happen to older people."

Anyone who wants to request a free Secure Your Home Pack is asked to call 0800 4561213 and quote Burglary Pack.
