Thriving Rushden club 'has been left in limbo'

A thriving rugby club feels its future has been put on hold because it is unsure if it can remain at its current home.

Rushden and Higham Rugby Club has been at Manor Park in Rushden for 30 years but its 25-year lease with Rushden Town Council has come to an end.

After several months of negotiations, the club hoped the council would agree to enter into a new lease at its meeting this week and was frustrated to hear no decision had been reached.

Club chairman Jeff Yeates said: "I'm disappointed that once again the town council hasn't agreed on a new lease.

"We have a clubhouse that is in need of refurbishing but we can't apply for grants to get on with the work or start working on the plans until a lease is in place.

"We thought a new lease was going to be agreed at the end of April but nothing was decided then and we are still waiting.

"We have about 600 members and are growing all the time and it's upsetting for everyone because we feel we are very much in limbo."

The club has been concerned about its future at Manor Park ever since it was revealed the town's new leisure complex is due to be built on the land.

In March, the town council reassured the club it would not be forced to move from the site.

Rushden Town Council leader Colin Wright said: "The siting of the leisure centre on the Manor Park land has not been finalised and as a result the agreement of the new lease has been delayed.

"We are endeavouring to bring this matter to an early conclusion and hope to hold a meeting soon.

"We have always said we want to work with, and assist, the rugby club to continue to remain in the town and will work for its best interests."
