They are seeing things no man or woman should see

A mum has spoken of her fear for her two teenage sons fighting for their country in Afghanistan after an upsurge in violence in the country.

After 15 British soldiers were killed in the past two weeks, Lisa Beale says she finds it tough to even listen to the news now.

But Mrs Beale, 42, of Binders Court, Stanion, is pressing ahead with plans to climb Mount Kilimanjaro to raise money for Help the Heroes, a charity for wounded servicemen.

Since the start of the latest round of fighting, a rocket narrowly missed a base where her son, 18-year-old soldier Adam Beale, is serving with the Royal Artillery 40 Regiment.

Brother Jake, 19, has also seen a tank in front of him hit a roadside bomb during the past few days.

Now Lisa, who also has two other children, is praying that her sons' rest and recuperation break scheduled for later this month goes ahead.

Mrs Beale said: "They've been right in the thick of it.

"I spoke to Adam on Saturday night who said the camp was hit by a rocket launch which missed by about 40 metres, which is no distance at all.

"They are seeing things that no man or woman should have to see but they are 100 per cent stuck in the fighting that is going on.

"I don't like listening to all this news, especially about the soldiers who were killed a few days ago. I can't see any way out of it.

"We're looking forward and praying that Adam comes home on July 24. We're hoping that's still going to go ahead."

Mrs Beale said she didn't support war but that the British army''s role in Afghanistan is key. "I don't support war," she said.

"Help for Heroes is a charity supporting wounded soldiers. If we had a flash flood in Northamptonshire, who would be sent out – the army.

"It just so happens that the army is in Afghanistan at the moment.

"But I know that if it wasn't for our soldiers out in Afghanistan, our streets in the UK would be much worse."

So far, Mrs Beale has collected 2,300 through various fundraisers.
