The Royal British Legion needs you

A band of volunteers who helped raise thousands of pounds for veterans and servicemen and women last year is trying to attract new recruits.

The Rushden branch of the Royal British Legion had a record-breaking year in 2009 when its volunteers raised more than 20,000 from their Poppy Appeal collections alone.

Now the organisation is launching a recruitment drive in a bid to attract more young volunteers to swell its membership.

The group's chairman, Harry Graham, said: "We want to help all the servicemen and women, not just people involved in previous wars, but those who are returning now from conflicts and operations, wherever that may be.

"That is something which needs to be addressed by all of us.

"We're working hard to attract more young members and have already joined forces with the cadets in our town.

"They are fabulous group of young people and we really appreciate what they are doing."

Mr Graham knows how important the work of the Royal British Legion is, having served as an able seaman radar plotter with the Royal Navy during the Second World War.

As well as attracting more young people, he hopes the branch will also gain members from people returning home from the forces.

He said: "We would welcome anyone who is returning from the forces who

would like to join us.

"It would be nice if we could attract more people to be standard bearers too."

The branch will be raising awareness about its activities and funds at a number of events during 2010.

These include appearances at Rushden Historical Transport Society's annual Cavalcade of Historical Transport and Country Show in May and the town's Party in the Park this summer.

This year the organisation's volunteers will also once more be raising funds through the Poppy Appeal in November.
