Taste of Poland for Wellingborough families

A children's centre has reached out to ethnic minority communities by holding a Polish day.

Croyland Children's Centre in Wellingborough held the themed event so young people and their parents could try Polish food, practise Polish customs and learn a few words of the language.

The event was designed to make all parents and adults who are in the contact with the centre feel like the centre relates to them and ensure it represents the needs of a diverse Wellingborough community.

It was also aimed at broadening the horizons of young people and their mums and dads and encouraging them to be open to a variety of cultures in the community.

Sue Berdette, from the centre in Croyland Road, said: "The Polish community are an important part of the community within Wellingborough

"We have a lot of families who speak English as their second language so we do what we can to help them.

"We felt this would broaden the children's horizons and show them how diverse Wellingborough is."

The children's centre, which provides childcare facilities for young people and services for their families, has made responding to the needs of all of its users a key target.

Responding to the needs of a large Polish community in the area, the centre has held EFL (English as a Foreign Language) classes to help integrate people into the country.

At the same time events like the Polish day, as well as a Spanish day, have been held to ensure people born and bred in Wellingborough are welcoming to new arrivals.

In particular the event on Wednesday focused on Polish customs so that more parents and children have an awareness of what is important to Polish people.

They learned some new Polish words so they can establish a basic dialogue with non-English speakers and got the chance to make Polish food and wear Polish clothes to learn a little more about their culture.
