Swimming club on crest of a wave

Wellingborough Amateur Swimming Club is celebrating its 40-year anniversary by inviting past and present members to an event in June.

The club was set up in the early 1970s when an advert was published, inviting people to go to a meeting at the Hind Hotel in Wellingborough with a view to creating a swimming club.

WASC was formed and has gone on to attract hundreds of members ever since.

The club is inviting its members, past and present, to celebrate its anniversary at an event at Wicksteed Park in Kettering on Friday, June 11.

Craig Brown, vice chairman and junior team manager for WASC, said: "I'm looking forward to the 40th anniversary celebrations and the chance to meet some old friends.

"I am proud that WASC is now entering its fifth decade with a fantastic organisation, a great team of volunteers and with parents and swimmers, just as enthusiastic about the sport we love as those that laid the

foundations in 1970."

WASC moved to its current home at the Waendel Leisure Centre in Wellingborough in 2007.

The centre's meeting room was named in honour of Geoff Bunker, one of the founding members of the club.

WASC puts on lessons, training or competitions every day of the week, either at the Waendel Leisure Centre or at other venues in Rushden, Oundle and Wollaston.

The club's championships, known for years as the Annual Gala, began in 1970 and have grown in stature and size over the years – the championships now take place over 10 evenings.

Over the 40 years the championships have been running more than 700 swimmers have taken part and swimmers have been presented with more than 10,000 medals.

Mr Brown said: "WASC swimmers have always been encouraged to expand their horizons and have competed at county, regional and national championships, with some WASC members even competing in the 1996 World Masters in Sheffield."

For more information on the club visit www.wasc.info or go along to the Waendel Leisure Centre on Mondays between 6pm and 8pm.
