Swim club ready for first ever gala

Plans are well under way for the first Kettering swimming gala.

Kettering Amateur Swimming Club has secured a sponsorship deal with Parkwood Leisure, which runs the town's swimming pool and others across the country to run the gala.

As part of its plans, the club, which formed in 1914, is hoping to hold an annual swimming competition for children aged 12 and under.

Organisers are looking to invite clubs from other parts of the county to take part.

However, it will have to be held at the swimming pool in Wellingborough, as the Kettering pool does not have gallery seats for spectators.

Darren Aaron, from the club, said they are hoping that now they have sponsorship they will be able to attract more members.

He said: "We have never before had sponsorship in our history.

"The other big clubs did and we were starting to fall behind.

"Now we have sponsorship it will help us to promote what we do and we can go forward with confidence.

"We have always gone to other club's galas so it will be a first for us to have our own and we will invite five or six other clubs to take part.

"Parkwood and Kettering Council have been fantastic and it's great to

have their backing.

"We want to attract more members.

"Swimming has so many benefits – it gives young people life skills and it's absolutely brilliant for their health.

"We teach them how to do professional dives and tumble turns and how to compete at a good level."

Mr Aaron said that as long as you can swim a width of the pool unaided, you can join the club.

A date has not yet been set for the gala.

When it was first established Kettering Amateur Swimming Club was originally based at the Victoria Baths in Bath Lane, before the club moved to its present site at the pool on London Road in 1984.
