A WOMEN’S group is encouraging those who need support to use its services.

She Matters, which was set up following the closure of Corby’s Women’s Centre, offers a drop-in service for women in the town.

Carol Davie, co-ordinator of the group, said about 1,800 women have used the group’s services since it was set up in April last year.

The group, based at Corby Trades and Labour Club in Stuart Road, holds a range of social activities, but just a handful have taken advantage of the crisis support it offers.

Ms Davie, said: “The drop-in is for anyone who wishes to come in for a cuppa and to meet friends and it is somewhere mums can change their babies.

“There is also free one-to-one support for anyone who needs it.

“If there’s a crisis situation, we have a counsellor available to us.

“We can help people in domestic violence situations, sexual abuse, benefit problems, housing problems – it’s knowing where to signpost them so they can access the help they need.”

The drop-in service is offered at the club every Tuesday to Friday between 11.30am and 4pm.

Ms Davie said: “The group of volunteers identified that Corby still needs a women’s centre so the labour club was fantastic in offering us the premises and we have had a lot of support from Corby Council and Northamptonshire Community Foundation. I think our ethos is about supporting all women in Corby regardless of age or creed.”

She said the group is looking for volunteers, in particular for those willing to undergo training to provide emotional support.

The group also runs a range of craft groups, knitting and stitching classes, guitar lessons and photography sessions.

A programme of events can be collected from the club or for details call 07715 367901 or email shematters2011@yahoo.co.uk.
