Staff threatened with screwdriver in another armed raid on a store
Robbers armed with a screwdriver stole money, scratch cards and cigarettes during an early-morning raid at an estate store.
Three men wearing face coverings burst into the Co-op store in Kingsway, Wellingborough, at about 4.30am yesterday.
There were two workers – a man and a woman – inside the store which was unlocked, with its shutters part way closed.
The robbers went in and one had an altercation with the male worker, who he punched to the body, but the worker was not seriously injured.
Police say they do not think the raid is linked to an attempted robbery at the Premier Store in Church Hall Road, Rushden, last Friday, when shopkeeper Dinesh Gorania used a mop to keep the would-be robbers at bay.
Chief Inspector Gary Ashton, territorial commander from Northamptonshire Police, said: “At this stage we do not believe that this incident is connected to a separate attempted robbery in Rushden late last week.
“Detectives are working meticulously in investigating these incidents, and we are confident that those responsible will be arrested.
“We would like to reassure local people that isolated cases like this are rare and thankfully in both cases no-one was seriously injured.”
A spokesman for The Co-operative said: “At around 4.20am on Thursday our Kingsway food store, in Wellingborough, was raided by three men.
“They threatened members of staff and stole a quantity of cash and cigarettes. The members of staff involved were not injured, but were very shaken by the incident.
“CCTV footage has been passed to the police, who are investigating, and we would appeal for anyone with any information to come forward.”
Steve Bull, 29, of Jubilee Crescent, Wellingborough, said: “I was surprised to hear about it, it’s my local shop. It’s the sort of thing you see in the movies, you just don’t expect stuff like that to take place.”
