Staff give £12,500 to hospital cancer wing

STAFF at a holiday home rental company have helped raise £12,500 for a cancer ward.

Staff at RCI Europe in Kettering handed over the generous donation to Kettering General Hospital’s Centenary Wing yesterday after a year of fundraising events.

Sean Lowe, managing director for RCI Europe, Middle East, Africa and India, said: “As an international business, with a European headquarters in Kettering, we like to encourage our staff to do something to support their local community.

“We decided to help the Centenary Wing at Kettering General Hospital because cancer is a disease which touches so many people, including a number of our own members of staff.”

The company, which employs 194 staff at its offices in Kettering Parkway, which are the international firm’s European headquarters, held raffles, a royal-themed day, Zumba dancing, a fun run, quizzes and sponsored individual events.

The final total raised also included a gift from head office of £5,600.

Mr Lowe handed over a cheque to Centenary Wing manager Helen Bennett and lead chemotherapy nurse Emma Mills at an RCI business briefing being held yesterday.

Ms Bennett said: “This is an amazing gift which will help us to improve the quality of care for the 250 new patients we see each year in the Centenary Wing with cancer or other conditions which need regular treatment.

“The staff at RCI have done an incredible job raising such a large amount of money for us in such a short time and we are very grateful indeed.”

The hospital is yet to decide how to spend the money, but ideas include items such as a flat screen TV with bracket, new curtains, wheelchairs and medical equipment such as a pump for administering medication, and drip stands.

The Centenary Wing opened in June 2000 after a two-year fundraising campaign supported by the Evening Telegraph raised £650,000.
