Snap up a school uniform for less than five pounds

A supermarket giant is helping parents beat the credit crunch by slashing the cost of school uniforms to less than £5.

From today, shoppers at Asda in Corby and Rushden will be able to pick up bargain packs of shirts, sweatshirts and trousers that will see children dressed for school with change from a 5 note for each outfit.

The supermarket is only running the sale for 10 days in a bid to capture a share of the back-to-school market almost six weeks before the summer holidays start.

The uniforms are available for children aged three to 16 and the price of 4.75 per uniform is based on a four-pack of shirts costing 3, two sweatshirts priced 3 and a pack of two pairs of trousers at 5.

Uniforms at Latimer Arts College cost around 50, with a blazer costing 22 or 25 depending on the size, jumpers costing 10 or 11.50 and the optional polo shirts for summer 12.50 each.

And it has been estimated uniforms for the Buccleuch Academy, opening in Kettering in September, will cost around 90.

A spokesman for Asda Corby said a display of the new uniforms would be in the foyer of the store from first thing this morning.

Parent Andrew Moore of Stamford Road, Kettering, said: "It is quite a good idea for parents who don't have children with a set school uniform, but most children have to wear branded clothes.

"Also I don't think you would get a teenager wearing clothes from Asda, even to go to school, as they would rather be seen in something with a brand name. However, the speed they grow and the way they treat their uniforms you definitely don't want to be paying a fortune for it."

Mum Lisa Coxell, of Lewis Road, Kettering, said: "I think this is great for little boys, as their uniforms will be trashed in the playground anyway.

"It can be ridiculously expensive to get uniforms if you have more than one child."

Anthony Thompson, head of the supermarket's fashion label George, said: "It might be depressing for kids to think about but this will be fantastic news for mums and dads.

"They'll be able to come in, fit their kids out and enjoy a relaxing, stress-free summer."

The national average cost of a complete school uniform stands at 199.
