Skatepark bids to be largest

Arenaline Alley is bidding to become the largest skatepark outside the United States with a £1.7m expansion plan.

The skatepark has revealed proposals to extend to land and buildings next to the existing building, with the hope the alley can build on its success and attract thousands more skateboarders and BMXers.

Additional indoor space, a new outdoor park and an area dedicated for disabled participants are among the plans.

The High Sheriff of Northamptonshire, David Laing, who was appointed chairman of Adrenaline Alley in February, will be joined by a new board to implement the proposals.

Mandy Young, founder of the charity, said: "Sometimes it is difficult to believe what we have achieved since we established the alley to provide our local young people a safe place to go and enjoy their urban sports.

"There have been challenges we have overcome on the way and there will be many more in the future, but David and the new team are already well on the way to achieve our vision for the future."

New vice-chairman Phil Tulba, sport expert Helen Cund, Mike Welsh from Tresham College and Wray Irwin from the University of Northampton will join the board to help manage the plans.

The improvements are also set to bring in new companies and employment for Corby.

The alley already has two firms ready to move into the expanded facility.

Mr Laing said: "I have watched and admired the successful growth of Adrenaline Alley and the contribution it has made to helping young people in Corby.

"I am delighted to be able to help the charity in its continuing development and looking forward to seeing the alley work even more closely with the Northamptonshire Community Foundation and our other charity the Northamptonshire Association of Youth Clubs as part of the exciting plans we have announced."

Adrenaline Alley, which was founded in 2002, has grown from an open air skatepark at Rockingham Motor Speedway with a few hundred participants to the best urban sports facility in the UK with more than 36,000 visitors a year.

The venue, in Arnsley Road, off Priors Haw Road, Corby, has been attracting some of the world's best professional skateboarders and BMXers.
