SIMPLY THE BEST

A VILLAGE is celebrating after being crowned the best in the county at a special ceremony.

Geddington won the Calor Northamptonshire Village of the Year 2006 trophy and scooped a number of awards.

These included:

l the Defra Building Community Life trophy in the large village category

l a certificate as joint overall winner in the small, medium and large village categories

l a trophy for the Information, Communication and Technology award for its professional website, quarterly newsletter and information booklet.

The awards were presented to Geddington parish councillors Val Bellamy and David Watson and Dick Rowley from the council's website.

Parish council vice-chairman Val Bellamy has lived in the village for 38 years.

She said: "It's great to win village of the year, especially because it's not just about aesthetics but recognises the people who make up the village.

"There is a true sense of community spirit in Geddington and people really work together so it's a credit to everybody."

Jean Webb runs The Star Inn in Bridge Street and described the village as one of the loveliest places she's known.

She said: "I'm not at all surprised Geddington won.

"It's a wonderful village with a real community spirit and a great place to live and raise a family."

The new title means Geddington will compete with county winners in the national village of the year competition.

Patrick and Patricia O'Doherty own the post office in Queen Street, which is the hub of village life.

Mr O'Doherty said: "Geddington is absolutely wonderful. I ended up here by accident after living all over the world and everyone's very friendly."

His feelings were echoed by Phyllis Lockwood, who lives in Malting Lane and is one of the village's 1,500 residents.

She said: "The village is steeped in history and extremely friendly and caring. Everyone works very hard and it is really treasured."
