Shops move to Woolies' store

A former Woolworths store is set to be filled with shoppers when two High Street names move into the building.

The Evening Telegraph can reveal the store will be filled by Au Natural and Ethel Austin, which are due to move into the empty unit in Corporation Street, Corby.

And the move will free up two smaller stores in the shopping centre.

Land Securities' town centre manager Daniel Pickard said: "This is a really positive move.

"It's good for Corporation Street. It was a big unit to be left empty.

"They started fitting out the store this week. There will be new jobs created but I can't give an exact number at the moment.

"We're confident we'll get new people into the other two shops soon."

The news follows the announcement that Corby Council will receive 52,000 from a 3m Government pot to help the town centre through the recession.

The financial help, announced yesterday by Communities Secretary John Denham, means Corby is one of 57 towns to get money.

Mr Denham said: "We know that the downturn has really hurt High Streets in areas of high deprivation across the East Midlands.

"Those councils will now be able to use our funding to come up with their own creative ideas to transform their boarded-up shops into something useful like a learning centre, meeting place for local people or showroom for local artists."

Corby MP Phil Hope said: "Corby town centre is thriving. Owners Land Securities have told me that trade is up, visitors numbers are up and the average spend is increasing."

Corby Council leader Cllr Pat Fawcett said: "Corby is not recession-proof but our new shopping centre, Willow Place, continues to develop.

"It is pulling in top names and there has been an increase in shoppers by 15 per cent."
