Shearer in Northampton to talk football

Premiership football legends Alan Shearer and Matt Le Tissier talked about their celebrated careers at a dinner hosted by Northampton Town FC last night.

The two former England strikers answered questions about their lives in football and the state of the national game in front of more than 400 dinner guests.

Shearer, who captained his country 34 times, told the Chronicle & Echo he thought Fabio Capello's reign as England boss got off to a solid start following the 2-1 victory over Switzerland at Wembley on Wednesday.

But he said the debate about the new England captain was irrelevant to the Italian's new-look side. He said: "I think Steven Gerrard played well as skipper against Switzerland, especially in the second half when he drove his team forward.

"But I don't think it really matters who is captain. I love John Terry and he'll be desperate to get the captaincy back and Steven Gerrard will be desperate to keep it."

The pair were joined at The Park Inn, in Silver Street, by comedian Mike Osman, who helped auction off several articles including signed Newcastle United and Manchester United shirts.

The auction lots raised thousands of pounds in total.
