Seeking carnival girls for year of royal duty

A search is under way to find a group of girls to represent their estates in a bid to find members of the 2010 Corby Carnival Court.

All young ladies aged over 11, who live in Corby, Gretton, Weldon, Cottingham, Middleton, East Carlton, Rockingham and Stanion, are invited to take part in the competition to find the ward princesses.

Terri Meechan, court manager and chaperone, said: "This is not a beauty contest, this competition is about finding the girls with the right personality to go forward and represent their ward at the grand final of the Corby Carnival Court selection competition in March.

"Ultimately they could represent the town of Corby as Carnival Queen or Princess at many events and functions all over the country for one year.

"This year's court members have been outstanding and have done a phenomenal job in representing Corby and have won many trophies throughout the year also."

The reigning Carnival Queen, Sophia Madden, who is also the reigning Miss Danesholme, said: "I have had the most amazing year of my life and being Carnival Queen has also given me a lot of confidence in myself and has made me very proud to represent Danesholme and Corby wherever we have gone, from places such as Dover, Faversham and Sheppey to St Neots and Nuneaton.

"I have also made so many new lifelong friends and gained so many memories that I will treasure for the rest of my life. It is a commitment, though, and you do need most of your weekends free to attend events but I really would recommend entering."

The titles up for grabs are Miss Beanfield, Miss Central, Miss Corby Old Village, Miss Cottingham, Miss Danesholme, Miss East (Lloyds) Miss East Carlton, Miss Exeter, Miss Great Oakley, Miss Gretton, Miss Hazel Leys, Miss Kingswood, Miss Lodge Park, Miss Middleton, Miss Oakley Vale, Miss Rockingham, Miss Rowlett, Miss Shire Lodge, Miss Stanion, Miss Tower Hill and Miss Weldon.

The competition will be held on Sunday, December 6, at the Grampian Club, in Patrick Road, Corby, from 10am and all title winners will be announced and crowned at around 3pm.

Entry forms are available at Corby Boating Lake Cafe, Corby Radio Studios or at www.corbycarnival.com.
