Search is on to find a market leader for Wellingborough

The search is on for a new supervisor who can help with plans to reinvigorate a town's market.

Wellingborough Council is looking for a new market supervisor to manage the town's market day-to-day and contribute to its "sustainability and development".

The job has a salary of 16,663 with the potential of going up to 19,998.

In the job description, the council says it is looking for someone who has the ability to lead a team and good customer service skills.

One trader on the market said he would welcome the arrival of a new permanent supervisor for the market, as long as they had the power and enthusiasm to help to improve it.

David Hustwait, who runs a clothes stall on the market on Wednesdays and Fridays, has been trading on the market for about 20 years and said it always used to be heaving with people.

He said: "If there was a good person running the market, you would have a good market, if they were left alone to manage it. The only time others should get involved would be if there was a major decision.

"The council say they have money to advertise it but why advertise this, with the empty stalls?

"I would say, on the first of the month, get all the casual traders that come and trade and advertise it for that day, because we would be better off with a full market to advertise rather than one with empty stalls."

He said the market need someone "firm but fair" to run it to help it achieve success again.

The Evening Telegraph reported in April that plans were in the pipeline to breathe life back into the market by promoting it with market-branded carrier bags, new signs and advertising.

Other plans include a new website being created for the market.
