School is making learning enjoyable
Inspectors have praised pupils' personal development at a school that was given a satisfactory score by Ofsted.
A visit by inspectors to Hawthorn Primary School, Kettering, in May highlighted areas where pupils excel as well as some pointers on how to improve.
The Ofsted report says the extent to which children enjoy their education is good, and their well-being is also good.
Areas which could be improved include providing more writing opportunities for younger children and ensuring work is better matched to pupils' needs.
An Ofsted inspector will pay another visit before the school's next inspection to monitor areas where there is under-performance.
The report says: "The school provides a satisfactory education for its pupils.
"A vibrant extra-curricular and enrichment programme in an otherwise satisfactory curriculum leads to good personal development for pupils.
"Pupils develop a strong sense of community and grow into confident and mature young people by the time they reach Year 6."
It goes on to say: "There are signs that standards are beginning to improve. Many pupils have made good progress this year, especially in Years 5 and 6.
"Standards in the rest of the school are not as high, particularly in writing. Many pupils struggle with handwriting, punctuation and spelling and also with the quality of their ideas when writing.
"Given the important strides made this year in improving the school, there is sound capacity for further improvement."
Headteacher Karena Corkill said the results did not come as a surprise.
She said: "They recognised our commitment to personal development and that we want our children to enjoy their time in school and develop their social skills, so they are motivated to learn.
"They are the most important things we can give them in primary school.
"Our standards are generally good and we are generally pleased with our SATs results.
"There will always be room for improvement and we are constantly reflecting on how we can move forward."
The school's last Ofsted inspection was in 2006, when it was given a score of satisfactory.
