'Safety' glasses bid to cut pub violence

Drinkers will be able to enjoy a safer night out this summer following the introduction of a scheme offering new polycarbonate glasses to every pub in a town.

Wellingborough PubWatch has bought the glasses with funding from Wellingborough Council and will be giving them out to publicans at their next meeting.

PubWatch has got pint, half pint and wine glasses so people can enjoy a nice cold pint or glass of wine in beer gardens across the town over the next few months without the dangers which can be associated with glass.

Chairman of Wellingborough PubWatch Ali MacLeod, who is manager of The Gloucester pub in Church Street, said: "The nice weather is here and we want people to sit outside.

"There are people who don't want the change but what we keep saying is if it stops one person from getting glassed in the face or body, it's got to be worth it.

"We are going to look at blanket coverage because we want to give the glasses to every pub in the town.

"We want to encourage the venues that have got an outside facility, like a pavement licence or a beer garden, to get them first and familiarise themselves."

Mr MacLeod added: "I haven't got a beer garden but if I did have one, I would make sure people took polycarbonate glasses outside."

Mr MacLeod said he had also been looking at buying alcopops such as WKD and Smirnoff Ice in polycarbonate bottles, although he said the price could be off-putting to publicans because crates of drinks in polycarbonate bottles cost about 3 more than crates of drinks in glass bottles.

In the past, Wellingborough PubWatch has spent council funding on projects including having police dogs out in town detecting drugs and on having a metal-detecting knife arch put up outside pubs to check drinkers for weapons.
