Saddling up for a cycling bonanza

More than 350 cyclists are set to head off on a series of rides in and around East Northamptonshire to celebrate the anniversary of their cycling club.

The Cyclists' Touring Club will hold its annual 'Birthday Rides' around the east of the county between Saturday, August 8, and Saturday, August 15, from a base in Oundle.

Rides co-ordinator Max Scott, from Rothwell, said: "Planning for the event has involved members of the local CTC for the last 12 months and they are looking forward to showing their visitors an area of lovely countryside that they may not otherwise have discovered.

"With the picturesque town of Oundle to explore there should be something for everyone."

Most cyclists will stay at Oundle School, with others camping around the town.

A full programme of cycle rides – at least four a day – are planned to suit different capabilities and will take riders into the surrounding counties as well as around East Northamptonshire.

All the cyclists will celebrate with a birthday tea at Deene Park on Wednesday, August 12.

National officials will be present for a special cake-cutting ceremony.

The cyclists will return to Oundle by several routes.

Rides planned for other days during the week include visits to Stamford, the Nene Valley Railway, Stanwick Lakes and Hamerton Zoo Park.

Longer rides will venture into Bedfordshire, Leicestershire and the Fens.

The cyclists will arrive during Saturday, August 8, and the rides will start on Sunday with trips north into Lincolnshire and Rutland.

Confident that members will not be tired out by their efforts, the local organisers have arranged a social event each evening, ending with a barn dance in Oundle School's Great Hall on the closing Friday.

There will also be competitive events with prizes for children.

The CTC was founded in August 1878 and commemorative rides have taken place almost every year since its centenary in 1978.
