RS will axe staff buses
Corby's largest employer is to scrap a free bus service for staff as part of a cost-cutting drive.
Staff at RS Components on the Weldon North Industrial estate have been using the service for 25 years to get to work at the huge complex three miles out of town.
The service runs across the entire town several times a day to coincide with shift changes for the 2,000 staff but now bosses have decided to scrap it to save 262,000 a year. The bus will pick up its last passengers on October 31.
One worker, who asked not to be named, said: "People are very angry about it. The bus is used by a lot of people and they rely on it.
"I understand why they are doing it. It is a lot of money to save."
Another employee said: "I don't think there is any alternative public
transport for most people.
"There will be some who can get lifts into work but I don't know if there's going to be room for people to park their cars.
"For me, it will mean a mixture of cadging lifts, walking or maybe buying a bike but I live at least four miles away so it's going to be tough.
"It used to be that working at RS was considered to be a job-for-life and the workers were really well looked after. It seems the company is moving away from that now."
RS has been making electrical components in the town for 25 years.
