Rotarians give pupils dictionary donations

Rotarians from around the north of the county have been busy out and about in the community.

The Rotary Club of Rushden Chichele presented dictionaries to all the Year 6 pupils at Higham Ferrers Junior School on Tuesday.

Chairman of the club's vocational committee Alan Matthias said: "We are pleased to donate these dictionaries as part of our programme of service to the community.

"We would like to ensure every pupil has a good dictionary when they start their secondary school career."

The club presented the children with an illustrated dictionary containing hints on grammar and punctuation, as well as dictionary definitions, designed for adults and children over nine.

A fundraising golf day organised by members of Wellingborough Rotary Club helped to raise more than 2,000 for Dogs For The Blind.

Club spokesman Michael Gent said: "It was a good day and we had 88 golfers take part.

"Given the tough economic climate I'm glad we've been able to raise as much as we did."

The club holds the fundraiser every year.

And pupils from Geddington Primary School have been busy filling Aquaboxes which are sent to disaster areas.

The pupils teamed up with Kettering Huxloe Rotary Club and Kettering MP Philip Hollobone for the project.

Youngsters filled the boxes with items including hammers, nails and baby clothes.

Mr Hollobone attended a school assembly to see the box handed over and hear how the project had inspired the pupils.

He said: "Congratulations to Geddington for a really worthwhile project.

"I hope other organisations in Kettering will take part in this campaign."

When the boxes are filled they are placed in storage, ready to be dispatched to a disaster zone anywhere in the world.

The also contain water purification equipment.
