Road is named in tribute to Jimmy
Corby Steel Park, road to be named Jimmy Kane Way: 17/01/12
Jimmy Kane – fondly known as Mr Corby – is set to be immortalised at the home of his beloved Steelmen when the road to Corby Town is named after him.
There are plans to name the access road to the Steel Park stadium Jimmy Kane Way, in tribute to his dedication to the club and his tireless work on behalf of the people of Corby. His family are delighted at the tribute.
Jimmy, who died aged 81 in 2007, was a former chairman of The Steelmen, a team he had supported since the 1950s. He first became a Corby councillor in 1961 and served the town for 46 years.
Cllr Kane was also a county councillor and served as its leader from 1981 to 1985 and again from 1996 to 1998, as well as being leader of the Labour Group on the authority for 21 years from 1979 to 2000.
Mark Pengelly, deputy leader of Corby Council and a close friend of the late Cllr Kane, said: “Jimmy was a stalwart for the town and is much missed by everybody.
“We have been trying to get this street renamed for a while now and are now pleased plans have been put forward to commemorate Jimmy in such a permanent way.
“I share memories of him being at the club for years and years and moving it forward.
“Without his input through those years it wouldn’t be the club it is today. The family is over the moon about it.”
A report will go to Corby Council’s development control committee on Tuesday, January 24, proposing the access road from Rockingham Road to the new football ground be named Jimmy Kane Way.
Corby Rugby Club and the Best Western Rockingham Forest Hotel will keep their Rockingham Road address but the section of the road leading to the sports facilities will change. The football club, the athletics club and Corby Indoor Tennis Centre have all been consulted and are happy with the plan.
Cllr Kane, a former boxer, was a steel union activist and also served as a worker director with the British Steel Corporation.
He was the founder of Pen Green Children’s Centre, a school governor and a supporter of Lakelands Hospice in Corby.
In 2002 he was awarded the CBE and a month before he died was given the highest honour in Corby when he became a Freeman of the Borough.
