Revamp of wards in final stages
Work has begun on the final stage of a £4.7m project to improve the condition of Kettering General Hospital wards.
The refurbishment of the Harrowden wards, which began last year, should be completed later this year.
Workers have been stripping out redesigning and improving all three Harrowden wards, A, B and C, since spring last year and staff and patients are already delighted with the new look.
The first ward was completed in September and the second at the end of last month.
Work on the third part, Harrowden C, has now begun and should be completed by the middle of this year.
Manager for cardio-respiratory services Maxine White, who is overseeing the revamp, said: "The changes we are making are totally transforming these wards – which were 30 years old and not designed to modern NHS standards.
"While it is a refurbishment within the existing ward block, many people say it is like a new build – it is so completely different to what it was like before."
The refurbishment has involved removing traditional six-bed bays, replacing them with three-bedded bays with en suite toilets and showers.
In addition, the number of single rooms available on the wards will increase from six to 12 when the refurbishment is complete.
Harrowden ward sister Jean Addison said: "Overall the refurbishment is creating a much calmer, lighter, more relaxed, spacious and comfortable environment for patients, relatives and staff."
The final aim is to create two L-shaped wards rather than having three smaller wards.
There are 33 beds in Harrowden A/B, which will increase to 54 when C is complete.
