Race cyclist seriously hurt in A45 crash

A cyclist taking part in a time trial on the A45 in Northamptonshire has suffered serious injuries after being hit by a 7.5 ton lorry.

The collision took place about about 7.45pm on the eastbound A45 near Wellingborough yesterday evening.

The cyclist, a 43-year-old Kettering man, sustained serious head injuries and was taken to Northampton General Hospital. He was subsequently transferred to the John Radcliffe in Oxford.

Police are appealing for anyone who saw the collision, or the cyclist and the lorry immediately before it, to contact them on 03000 111 222.

The eastbound carriageway was closed for two hours as a result of the collision.
