Projects bag cash in store giveaway

Community groups have been given vital funding for their projects thanks to a supermarket's giveaway.

Co-operative Midlands has given 2,000 to Corby Furniture Turnaround and 1,000 to Corby Kingswood Junior Football Club as part of its Making a Difference Community Dividend Fund.

The turnaround, in St Mark's Road, collects unwanted furniture and sells it at a reduced price to those in need.

It will use its money to fund the project's training scheme.

The football club will use its share to create new coaching sessions for children with disabilities and for children aged 10 to 16 who want to learn the sport.

Turnaround project manager Andrew Spalding said: "We are very grateful for this generous Co-operative grant.

"We got some money from them in 2006. We applied last year and were successful again.

"The project not only helps those to who we deliver the furniture. We provide volunteers, including school leavers and people with special needs, with workplace skills essential for helping them find paid employment.

"This award will help us build on our achievements and develop our training programme further."

Robert Mair, from Corby Kingswood FC, said: "The disability section now has 17 boys and girls who train regularly.

"They won their first match against Northampton and others have entered our unaffiliated session for children aged 10 to 16.

"We feel a lot of children miss out on sport because they feel they are not good enough and may feel intimidated by the thought of joining an existing affiliated team."

Co-op regional secretary Paul Cranfield said: "The community fund can make a real and lasting contribution to local communities and these Northamptonshire groups are deserving causes."
