Postman makes special delivery

A postman has performed the most important special delivery of his life – his beautiful new baby.

James Tipler was on hand to help partner Katie Newell deliver little Emma Louise Tipler in the couple's bathroom in the early hours of Friday when it became clear they would not have time to make it to hospital.

And incredibly, Mr Tipler did it all without verbal instructions as he is profoundly deaf.

Miss Newell, 24, and Mr Tipler, 27, of Bath Road, Kettering, are now settling down to life with baby Emma and their two other children Megan, four, and Grace, two, who were blissfully unaware of what was going on as they both slept through the whole episode.

Emma was born just one hour and 18 minutes after Miss Newell went into labour – which was not much of a shock to her as Grace had arrived within two hours of labour starting.

Miss Newell said: "James was really calm through the whole thing. He didn't make a fuss, he just got on with it.

"I am very proud of him and he is very proud of himself too.

"We had been on to the hospital because we had not felt her move all day. We left at 11.30pm and by the time I was home the labour had started.

"I called the hospital and they said give it half an hour and have a bath. But by the time I was off the phone she had started coming.

"I wanted to go back into hospital but she had started coming so we wouldn't have got there."

Miss Newell's brother Matthew was on the phone taking instructions from the midwife, which he was relaying to Mr Tipler.

Miss Newell said: "They were both very organised – I wasn't."

And in a slightly unorthodox move, Miss Newell gave birth standing up.

She said: "I didn't have much choice, but it actually made it much easier."

It was only afterwards that Miss Newell made the connection between Mr Tipler's job and the momentous delivery task he had just completed.

She said: "It didn't occur to me at the time but it was quite funny when I thought about it."

Both mother and baby are doing well.
